About the essay series Transitions in Planning

The editors of InPlanning initiated the InPlanning Essay Series 'Transitions in Planning'. This series of essays deals with gradual and more radical changes in spatial planning ideas and practices in the Netherlands.

Each essay addresses a specific aspect in the empirical analysis of planning practices and how they have evolved and changed over time, a shift in theoretical thinking or innovation in education. Lessons are learned about current challenges, new enablers and barriers to institutional change are being identified and discussed. For it is clear that we need forward-looking, sustainable, integral, culturally rooted and legitimately just forms of planning.

The Netherlands has a history of integrated planning, with renowned plans at national, regional and local level. The Delta Works were famous in the 20th century: what are the questions, actions and reflections in Dutch planning in the 21st century?

Each essay addresses a particular planning challenge. The manuscripts went through a review process with two reviewers for each article, this revision process resulted in high quality essays.

Series editors: Linda Carton, Melika Levelt, Jannes Willems, Patrick Witte, Ferry Van Kann, Barbara Tempels, Ina Horlings.
