Rapid urbanization around the world has escalated the need for diverse modes of transport. Governments in developed and developing countries are spending huge amounts of their resources to encourage users to shift towards more sustainable modes of transport.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has emerged as a cost-effective alternative in contrast to expensive rail and LRT systems. This empirical research utilizes the actor relational approach to explore the complex association between transport, urban development, and economy and their interrelation in the context of Lahore, Pakistan. This research applied various quantitative and qualitative methods to discern the impacts of BRT.

The evidence from Lahore indicated that BRT has significantly impacted its neighbouring areas in terms of travel behaviour, urban development, and economy. Besides providing mobility benefits, BRT is successful in generating land development and economic activities. To streamline these changes and to promote sustainable development in the study area, a transit-oriented development framework has been proposed in this research.

About the author

Muhammad Aamir Basheer holds a Master's degree in Transportation Sciences with specialization in Mobility Management (Hasselt University, Belgium, 2017). From 2017 to 2021 he worked as a PhD researcher at the Center for Mobility and Spatial Planning (Ghent University) and Transportation Research Institute, IMOB (Hasselt University). His research interests span the fields of mobility and spatial planning, and include sustainable development, sustainable urban mobility, road safety, and housing in particular.
